Originally, the European Union enacted a directive 2002/95/EC.
This directive (known as the RoHS initiative) established limitations in electrical and electronic equipment of certain hazardous compounds. These compounds are Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, Polybrominated Bisphenyls (PPB), and Polybrominated Diphenyl Esters (PBDE).
